Business Advisory: Distressed Businesses – From Early Warning to Sustainable Growth

Date: Dec 1, 2026 - Dec 1, 2026

CPD hours: 2 Hours

Time: 10:00 - 12:00

Event Type: Webinar

Presenter: Jako Liebenberg CA(SA)
Director

Business Advisory for Distressed Businesses focuses on providing strategic, financial, and operational guidance to organizations experiencing financial difficulty or operational instability.

Overview

When a client's business starts to slide, their accountant usually sees it first: an overdraft that no longer swings back into credit, debtors who pay a little later each month, VAT and PAYE payments that start to slip. What happens next often decides whether the business recovers on its own terms or ends up in business rescue or liquidation.

This focused two-hour session equips accounting practitioners and business advisors to use their commercial and financial knowledge to detect distress early, stabilise cash, negotiate informally with lenders, SARS and key creditors, and guide management from recovery into sustainable growth. It also shows where informal turnaround ends and formal business rescue or liquidation becomes the right advice.

Join Jako Liebenberg CA(SA) on the 1st of December 2026 from 10h00 to 12h00 as he unpacks the practical aspects of advising distressed businesses, including assessing business viability, understanding business rescue procedures, evaluating funding requirements and managing creditor relationships. The session will also examine accountants’ professional responsibilities, independence considerations and potential legal liabilities when working with financially distressed clients.

Learning objectives

Attending this webinar will equip you with the following skills:

  • Identify early-warning signs of distress in management accounts, bank data, debtor and creditor ageing and SARS records, and apply the Companies Act six-month "financially distressed" test.
  • Prepare and run a 13-week cash-flow forecast and cash committee to stabilise liquidity and rebuild credibility with lenders.
  • Prioritise practical cash and margin levers, including working capital, pricing, customer and product profitability, and targeted cost reduction.
  • Prepare the information pack that supports informal arrangements with banks, SARS and key creditors, and evaluate an informal turnaround against a compromise with creditors, business rescue or liquidation.
  • Develop a recovery-to-growth plan with KPIs, funding readiness and governance that management can own.
  • Structure and price the advisory engagement while managing independence, liability and reporting responsibilities
