In Session 7 we looked at an introduction to MS Excel. Session 8 focuses on how a bookkeeper/accountant can use the software to perform the full bookkeeping cycle.  

This is a hands-on session where you are provided with MS Excel templates of journals, ledgers and monthly trial balances. You will be expected to use live company documents to capture transactions in the journals, post to the ledgers, and finally come up with a monthly trial balance.

Learning objectives  

By the end of this session the candidate should: 

  • Understand how to file documents logically for processing; 

  • Know the different types of accounting documents and how to capture them in journals; 

  • Understand how to post information from journals to ledgers; 

  • Understand how to perform bank reconciliations and other month-end transactions; and  

  • Understand how to do monthly trial balances.

  The webinar will cover the following topics:  

  • Accounting documents. 

  • Filing logically. 

  • Processing in the Purchases Journal. 

  • Processing in the Sales Journal. 

  • Processing in the Cash Book. 

  • Processing in the Petty Cash Book. 

  • Completing the bank reconciliation. 

  • Monthly General Journal transactions. 

  • Posting to the ledgers. 

  • Deriving monthly trial balances. 


Obtaining your certificate 

This session qualifies for 6 CPD hours with your professional body including: ACCA, SAICA, AAT, SAIPA, SAIBA, IAC, CIS, ICBA, LSSA, FPI, and the IBA. The SAAA CPD policy is compliant with IFAC IES7 and is recognised by all relevant professional bodies. 

Upon successful completion, all attendees are issued with a CPD certificate available in an online profile. 


About the presenter 

Innocent Shongedza CTFAIcba(SA) 

Innocent Shongedza is a Certified Technical Financial Accountant with the ICBA. Having worked for 12 years in the corporate world, Innocent moved into facilitating occupational training and development programmes where he has gained valuable experience. 

Innocent is a registered assessor and moderator with various Education and Training Quality Assurance Bodies (ETQA's). He is also certified in training Sage Business Cloud Accounting and QuickBooks Online Accountant.
