The POPI Act is now a reality. Get your own firm POPI compliant and start making money by becoming a "POPI advisor" for your clients.

Overview:

The Protection of Personal Information Act of 2013 (POPIA) is now fast becoming a reality.  With the advent of the appointment of the Information Regulator in December 2016, work is already underway to develop and implement the Regulations to the Act.  Although the regulations are only expected at the end of 2017, organisations can and should start preparing now. Once implemented, a time period of 12 months for compliance is expected, which means that organisations need to be ready by the end of 2018.   POPIA is a Privacy act, and compliance will be non-negotiable, but organisations should see this as an opportunity to take some pro-active steps to achieve better overall Information Governance.

Paul Mullon is a leading Information Governance professional and advisor to public and private sector organisations.    He was one of the first thought leaders in the emerging field of Information Governance, writing the first Wikipedia definition way back in 2009.  He is currently formalising his Integrated Information Governance model into a PhD in Information Science.  He will share guidance and an implementation framework for POPIA in conjunction with other Information Governance initiatives (PAIA, Information Security, King IV, Enterprise Content Management etc) during this two-hour webinar:

  • Brief background refresh on the Act and its requirements
  • The eight conditions and related aspects

Presenter

Paul Mullon is an Information Governance consultant and trainer.  Whilst this is a relatively new term it encompasses a range of traditional activities, from Records and Information Management through to complex Content and Knowledge Management implementations.   He has a diverse background which allows him to bring this multi-faceted perspective to the industry.

His academic background is in business management; he has a B. Com (Hons), and an MBA.  This background means that he clearly understands how and why Information must support business and its processes and operations.  He has been in the computer or information industry since 1984, having worked for a number of South African leading companies. In the early stages of his career he was technically involved in the computer industry, providing operating and application system support to mainframe and mini-computer customers.  Although no longer as involved in the details of the technology, this background gives him a unique view into how systems work and integrate with the business.

During the last 20+ years he has been involved in workflow, document and records management implementations and solutions to many of South Africa’s corporations and public entities. This focus on the Enterprise Content Management arena has allowed him to build specialist knowledge in all aspects of the field.  He has worked in both the paper and electronic document and records management environments, giving him great insight into both, and how they interact in the real world.  Before becoming a consultant he was the Marketing Director for Metrofile, South Africa’s largest records management company.

He has presented at many conferences and workshops, and has published over 200 articles on various aspects of document and records management.  Mr Mullon is a frequent member of ARMA and AIIM, and is very involved in standards development for document management applications and records management at both South African and international levels, and is the Head of the South African delegation to international standards committee meetings. In 2005 Mr Mullon was appointed as the world-wide Convenor of an ISO working group for the Long Term Preservation of Electronic Records, a position which he holds to this day.  In addition he is Chairman of the South African Technical Committee for Document Management Applications which looks at document and records management technology standards.

He is the Founding Member of COR Concepts, an information management consultancy.
