Financial analysis is applied to better understand the performance of a company. It is a critical tool with a wide range of applications in the financial services sector.
Credit officers use financial analysis to determine if a loan applicant is financially stable and will be able to repay a loan. In Securities and Insurance Companies, financial analysts need to assess the prospects for profitability, dividends, and capital appreciation from an investment. Regulatory authorities use financial analysis to determine whether to grant an operating license to a company operating in a regulated industry.
The focus of this course is understanding the ratios to better understand the business. Ratios help analysts and management to identify parts of the business that are changing, and to understand better what's going on with the company. Ratios are useful in assessing profitability, liquidity, and risk. They highlight sources of competitive advantage for the company as well as any potential trouble spots.
Ratios on their own are meaningless unless they are compared, either through different time periods for the same company; or one company to another in the same industry. This is important because business trends often could really be driven by trends in the economy or the industry. So, to figure out whether it's the company that's doing something well or poorly, or if it's an industry wide phenomenon, we must look at that company compared to its industry or its competitors. We therefore recommend that you also take the Business Analysis Course.
