About this Course
This online short course provides participants with a practical introduction to business compliance within a South African context. The course is designed to equip bookkeepers, accountants, small business owners and administrators with the knowledge and skills to navigate the country’s regulatory landscape and keep a business compliant with its statutory obligations.
The course covers the key regulators and legislation every South African business must deal with, including the CIPC and the Companies Act, SARS (income tax, payroll taxes and VAT), the Department of Employment and Labour (UIF), the Compensation Fund (COIDA), the BCEA and the CIDB.
Learners will work through each compliance area in practical terms: registrations, returns and deadlines, record-keeping requirements and the penalties that follow non-compliance. The course integrates practical checklists, step-by-step processes and worked examples to ensure immediate workplace application.
Particular attention is given to the recurring compliance cycle — CIPC annual returns and beneficial ownership declarations, EMP201 and EMP501 submissions, VAT201 returns, UIF declarations and the annual Return of Earnings — so that learners can build and manage a complete compliance calendar.
By the end of the course, participants will have a confident working knowledge of South Africa’s business compliance requirements, enabling them to support employers and clients with accurate, timeous and well-documented statutory submissions.
Learning Objectives
By completing this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify the key regulators and legislation governing business compliance in South Africa (CIPC, SARS, UIF, COIDA, BCEA, CIDB)
- Register a business correctly with the CIPC, SARS, the UIF and the Compensation Fund
- File CIPC annual returns, beneficial ownership declarations and company detail updates on time
- Meet income tax, provisional tax and VAT registration and filing obligations
- Calculate and submit PAYE, UIF and SDL through monthly EMP201 returns and EMP501 reconciliations
- Submit the annual Return of Earnings and manage workplace injury claims under COIDA
- Administer staff leave in line with BCEA entitlements
- Determine CIDB registration and grading requirements for construction work
- Build a compliance calendar covering monthly, bi-annual and annual statutory deadlines
- Identify the penalties and business risks of non-compliance and implement controls to prevent them.

Her areas of focus include tax optimisation, business development and online sales and marketing. Ruzel combines technical expertise with a practical, client-centred approach, making her a trusted resource for individuals and organisations seeking confident, solutions-focused financial support.
Prerequisites / Admission Requirements
This course is open to anyone who works in, or intends to work in, a bookkeeping, accounting, payroll, HR or business administration environment. The following are recommended prerequisites:
- Ability to work with basic calculations and financial figures.
- Access to a computer with internet connectivity for online learning.
- Basic understanding of South African business operations.
- Familiarity with bookkeeping or accounting concepts (advantageous but not required).
Assessments
This course includes formative assessments to test knowledge throughout the modules. Learners must achieve all competencies of the course.
