The SA Accounting Academy’s Management of an Accounting Practice (MAP) Survey, now in its third iteration, is the only survey of its kind that provides an in-depth analysis of how small and medium accounting firms are managed in South Africa. The 2020/21 edition is additionally useful in that it provides valuable insight into how these firms have adapted to the new pressures of the Covid-19 pandemic and the associated lockdowns.

In comparing different sized firms across fees, office size, staff structure, salaries, profitability and marketing techniques the MAP survey is a practical barometer for comparing and improving firm practice management.

The accounting profession has experienced major environmental changes and traditional theories of strategy predict that firms need to adapt to their external environment. This requires that firms continually evaluate and re-align their organisational capabilities in order to ensure long-term survival. The only way that small firms can achieve this is by having access to market data. The MAP Survey has been developed specifically for this purpose.

The survey and this analysis were undertaken and managed By Mission Control. Mission Control provides management support and advisory services based on critical business and market intelligence that is created, sourced and analysed according to clients’ requirements. Their approach to data sourcing and creation is effective and creative and the analyses approach, methods and systems are cutting-edge.
