SARS has warned the public to be on the alert for two new e-mail scams where taxpayers are:
urged to view a summons letter from the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) of SA, and
requested to allow foreigners to register a spaza using their address.
Article:
The summons letter email threatens the taxpayer with court litigation and company blacklisting. This email contains an attachment with a link which leads the victim to a malicious website.
Taxpayers who register a spaza on behalf of illegal foreigners will be liable and responsible for any tax and unlawful conduct pertaining to the spaza. Owing any tax to SARS, the taxpayer’s own home may be attached. Any unlawful conduct will cause the taxpayer to be subject to prosecution.
Taxpayers are cautioned against actioning as advised in the communication received.
Make sure the email or SMS is genuine before you click on any link.
Protect yourself from scams and phishing!
SARS taxpayers should take note of the following:
Do not open or respond to emails from unknown sources.
Beware of emails or SMSs asking for personal, tax, banking or eFiling details.
SARS will never send you hyperlinks to other websites. Watch the short tutorial video on how to spot scams.
