The Minister of Employment and Labour has extended the application period for the UIF TERS scheme to 15 September for those workers who needed support between 1 July and 15 August. During a recent SAFM radio interview, it was clarified that It applies to employees, should they have been allowed to go to work during that period – and there should not have been any salary – and in particular those employees who earn less than R3 500. It’s very clear it covers the period there was a Level 5 and Level 4 lockdown. That’s the period that has been covered.

There are some specific details that employees and employers need to be aware of:

  • basically people who experienced problems between April and June are able to apply up until 15 September 2020.
  • for those people who haven’t applied for July 1 through to August 15, if were problems with their applications, they will be assisted.
  • even those who have not applied can still apply.
  • if people applied during the April to June period but they had problems, they will still be engaged by the UIF scheme, and there won’t be that R3 500 limitation. But, as it pertains to July 1 through to August 15, the R3 500 limitation is applicable because it does define who the employees and who the employers are, and it meets that limit to R3 500.
  • Even where you did not apply at all, but you want to apply now, whatever the reason may be not to apply; but you can still apply – but only for the period of April and May.
