Professional accountants are required to undertake mandatory structured ethics training annually. This CPD requirement is enforced by all registered professional bodies recognised by the SA Qualifications Authority in South Africa, including SAICA, SAIPA, SAIBA, ACCA, CIMA, IAC and CSSA.
The SA Accounting Academy, in collaboration with Caryn Maitland CA(SA), developed a CPD ethics series to assist professional accountants to comply with this requirement.
This series will incorporate the following major elements:
The aim of this series is to unpack the subject of ethics into these three distinct areas that all come together to form an individual that is ethical in their personal, professional and business capacities.
Webinar 1: Introduction to Ethics: Personal, professional & Business Ethics (1 hour webinar)
In order to become an all-round ethical individual, one needs to look at ethics from a personal, professional and business perspective. This webinar is a high level introduction to understanding the ethical framework that accountants work in and from.
Webinar 2: Personal Ethics (2 hour webinar)
Before professional accountants can start understanding professional and business ethics, it is important to take a pulse check with ourselves and become aware of where we stand as individuals. This topic assists the individual to be able to reflect on his/her own personal ethics before looking outward.
Webinar 3: Business Ethics (2 hour webinar)
Having established the individual's personal ethics, this webinar takes an outward look at how the individual interacts with others in business. Business ethics involves moral principles that guide the way a business conducts itself internally and externally.
Webinar 4: Professional Ethics (2 hour webinar)
Professional behaviour encompasses the interactions that one has with fellow colleagues, customers as well as leadership. It also gives guidance on how one performs their duties. This webinar looks at what guides professional behaviour - the Code of Professional Conduct. It is important to note that all professional bodies make it compulsory for their members to follow the code of professional conduct.
Obtaining your CPD certificate
Each webinar in the series qualifies for 2 CPD hour with your professional body including: ACCA, SAICA, AAT, SAIPA, SAIBA, IAC, CIS, ICBA, LSSA, FPI, and the IBA. The SAAA CPD policy is compliant with IFAC IES7 and is recognized by all relevant professional bodies.
All attendees are issued with a CPD certificate available in an online profile.

Caryn Maitland CA(SA)
Caryn Maitland is a Chartered Accountant (SA). She has been a member of IRBA as a registered auditor and accountant since 2002 and is also a registered member of SAICA.
Caryn has lectured Auditing and Accounting at various institutions and has conducted independent workshops and seminars for professional accountants since 2006 on various topics.
Caryn has presented on the national tour for the annual Legislation Update with ProBeta Training (Pty) Ltd in 2014 and 2015, as well as on the FASSET national tour for the Tax Administration Act in 2014. She is also involved with the annual SAICA SMP Technical tour.
